Giving birth in Mallorca

I had my 1st baby in the UK with NCT antenatal classes and it went really well with no intervention and just gas and air. I was very nervous about having a baby here as the norm here is generally to have an epidural, drip and often an assisted delivery with, in some hospitals, an 80% episiotomy rate! Yikes!

After several horrific trips to the large public hospital in Palma when I suffered a miscarriage, I decided I DEFINITELY was not going to have a baby there. They treated me with absolutely no sympathy or dignity, so we got private health cover (much better than BUPA!)and I had my baby at Palmaplanas private hospital in Palma.
It went brilliantly and although I could tell they all thought I was nuts not to just take the drugs, they respected my wishes. The main thing is to make your wishes very clear right from the beginning. They can never force you to do something without your consent! My placenta started bleeding midway so the obstetrician told me I had to be hooked up to monitors on the bed, but it was fine and they let me have the bed tilted slightly so I wasn't flat on my back.
The staff were all lovely (and amazed to see me strolling down the passage so soon after the birth, as most women are still unable to walk for some time with an epidural!)
So my experience was very positive. Just inform yourself 1st, have a rough birthplan and ask them to keep you informed all along.
